SUBJECT : Final X-15 Flight Report 69-1

Summary

No flights were accomplished since the last flight report (68-11) was published. One flight, 1-82-142, was scheduled but was not flown due to cancellation on December 31, 1968 of the X-15 program. Eleven attempts were made to fly but all were canceled; five for weather and one attempt resulted in an abort when the inertial system malfunctioned.

WTR Launch Monitor Experiment

The feasibility of coordinating an X-15 launch with a target launch was proven on the last flight of the X-15. No data were obtained due to a malfunction of the experiment. The equipment has been shipped back to the contractor.

High Altitude Infrared Background Experiment

Environmental testing of the experiment was completed. It was installed to be flown on flight 1-82-142; this experiment never flew aboard the X-15. The equipment has been shipped back to the contractor.

Aircraft Disposition

The two X-15's (X-15-1, X-15-2) are presently being prepared for shipment to the Air Museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. X-15-2 will be detained until loads testing is completed on the right wing.

The two B-52's will remain on flight status to support the joint NASA/Air Force Lifting Body Flight Program.

Flight Test Data

Figures 1 and 2 present the final data from flights 1-80-140 and 1-81-141.
